Artifact Uprising

April 01, 2014

Alright y’all. Who wants the chance to design their own postcard pack from Artifact Uprising!? I’m not going to lie, it’s fairly addicting. After getting my first set, I very quickly started setting aside more photos for the next round. I’ve also started working on a love-book for me and my man, ha. I think it would be really fun to start printing these regularly… Who wants to go down memory lane via a laptop and a bunch of random JPG files? That’s not fun.

The postcard pack comes in a set of 20 on 100% recycled paper – and are inspired by the “disappearing beauty of the tangible”. They have this wonderful softness to the print quality that leaves them feeling… it’s hard to explain! I love it :)

Bagtazo

March 30, 2014

I recently started working alongside jewelry designer, Courtney Cady, at Cuyana in San Francisco. She always struts in with the most amazing assortment of jewelry on – low and behold it’s usually from her own collection, Bagtazo. I am now her biggest fan!

“Bagtazo is inspired by traditional body adornment and primitive production techniques. Using simple materials worked by hand, the pieces are derived from folk and tribal wares.”

Introducing Shauna Haider – a creative director, graphic designer and blogger living in Portland, Oregon! I first met Shauna 2 years ago at a retreat in Palm Springs called Designer Vaca. Since then, she has continued to be an inspiration in all that she does! This week, we have a double-wammy of Shauna love – as she is featured on Bre’s Creative Diaries as well +

…a little bit about her:
“I spend my days creating branding, web and print-based solutions for small businesses at my boutique design studio, Branch. After many years of freelancing and working at agencies, I launched Branch in September 2013 and it’s been incredibly fulfilling to work with a roster of clients I truly believe in. I also co-own a blogging workshop, The Blogcademy with two friends and we travel the world teaching women the strategy behind blogging. We’re gearing up to kick off 11 new dates in May! When I’m not designing, I’m sharing design and style insights on the lifestyle blog I started in 2007, Nubby Twiglet. My life these days is very full but I’m lucky that for the most part, it revolves around my favorite things: designing, teaching and blogging.”

…and now her favorite piece and why:
“I love this skirt because it’s the most perfect shade of Crayola crayon green, my favorite color ever since I was a child.”

Thanks so much Shauna!

No. 6 Store

March 24, 2014

I’m in the market for some clogs and came across these gems. No. 6 store has such an amazing selection of colors and styles. How to choose?? It doesn’t help that the model is seriously cute and pairing the shoes with incredible looks… That black dress?? Yum.

Introducing Kate Harmer of Hum Creative – I’ve been recruiting her for this feature since it started so I can’t tell you how happy I am to see her pretty face ( alongside her incredible dog ) here today! She’s been working as an illustrator and designer for over 10 years, producing some really great work – one of my recent favorites being The Rhoads promo. I got my hands on a printed copy and was very very impressed! Drooling, in fact.

…a little bit about her:
“I’m the Founder & Creative Director of Hum Creative, a design studio based in Seattle. Running Hum brings me so much joy and satisfaction, but is also the hardest thing I’ve ever done. Every morning presents a bunch of new learning experiences, and every night I am overwhelmingly proud of, and grateful for, the Hum team. My husband and I are obsessed with our two french bulldogs, Etta and Margaux. They definitely run the house, as well as the Hum office — we all work to a constant soundtrack of various adorable (and not so adorable) dog sounds.”

…and now her favorite piece & why:
“My studio did some branding for Jennifer Meyer, who is an amazing jewelry designer. I bought these cute little heart studs that she designed to celebrate when we completed the project. This Christmas, my husband gave me a single “N” initial stud (his name is Nick). I loved it so much that I pierced a new hole in my ear so that I could wear it every day! The combo of the two earrings feels really special to me — together they celebrate the best of my work and home life.”

Thanks Kate!

3 things +

March 17, 2014

Three things that have made me happy as of late:

01. I recently decided to try out Artifact Uprising – I’ve been wanting to print something with them for a while now – Cassie from The Veda House inspired me! Overall, I’m super happy with how they turned. If I’m going to be honest though, they are a tad bit expensive! I wouldn’t be able to print with them regularly but it’s perfect for something really special.

02. Last week, I explored my neighborhood a bit. I walked about 10 minutes away from my studio and landed in Old Oakland for Loren Crosier’s art show. I didn’t realize how close I was to such amazing shops & restaurants. That’s what I get for not making time to enjoy longer lunches… This shot is from Crown Nine, the jewelry boutique that hosted the show. If you guys are ever in the area, I highly recommend visiting & walking a few blocks in each direction! ( note: there are really good tacos across the street from Crown Nine )

03. This photo was taken a few days ago in Baton Rouge! Every year, since I was 3, I have gone to Louisiana to celebrate St. Patricks Day with my huge awesome loud family! We start drinking green beer at 8am, eating grits and left over crawfish for breakfast, and yell at people on floats for cheap shiny beads?? It’s one of my favorite life traditions.

Go Stamp + Go!

March 13, 2014

Cheers to the 5th traveling stamp participant — Adrienne Antonson of STATE. Do y’all remember her Lovely Lady feature? It’s one of my favs, to this day. SO…. Can you even believe how hard she knocked this project out of the park? I literally screamed when I got the images!!

Her thoughts:
“As a life long pen-pal, I love anything that comes in the mail! And mail that you can make things out of — even better! Emma’s traveling stamp project had me at hello and I could not wait for it to arrive in my mailbox. Being the first East coast recipient of the traveling stamp, I knew we had to do something big. So making an entire stamped outfit seemed like a no-brainer. The whole STATE team got involved and shared in the messy fun. We made stamped linen pants, a smock, and a silk head scarf. And honestly, we could have kept stamping for days.”

“As a professional maker, it’s easy to get in a creative rut. So to have a project that was purely for fun was such a welcome change. It was inspiring to think of all the ladies before us who used the stamp, and we were thrilled to be continuing the chain. I’m excited to see where the little stamp goes next and what it makes!”

Don’t forget to follow along on Instagram & Twitter with the hashtag #travelingstamp. We are documenting the mailing, making, and finished products for your Enjoyment, wink*

PLUS >> !!! We loved the stamped smock so much, we’ve added it to the STATE online shop. There is only the ONE available ( update: SOLD OUT ) so make sure to snag it quick if you’re interested. I have a red STATE smock & am obsessed. It’s the perfect layering piece that goes with just about anything.

This spring, I am participating in a exhibition with 10 other Stockholm based architects, designers, & illustrators. I´m also excited to be doing a work collab with a rather big international shoe company.”

Per-Tim

March 10, 2014

I’ve got sleep on the mind you guys… or shall I say, lack of sleep? Before diving into my pillow-talk, can we please admire PER-TIM?? They are a Melbourne-based label specializing in graphic loungewear, sleepwear and bedding. Do you guys enjoy changing into your “I’m at home and ready to veg” clothes as much as I do? I mean, it’s literally the 1st thing I do. They are definitely not as cute as these pieces ( cue my grey drawstrings and tank top ) but maybe some day!

So my pillow talk… without getting all “omg listen to all my issues” on you, I’ll just say that I am a horrible sleeper. I bring this up because I would love to hear about other people’s experiences. I’m trying to work through my sleep stuff without being too dramatic and running to the doctor. Are you the type that goes to bed and doesn’t move a single inch until your alarm goes off? Or do you toss and turn, dream a lot, drool, what’s your thing??

Me personally?? I have always thought I was just a really tired person that loved to sleep… I would proudly clock 13-14 hours in high school ( on the weekends of course ). In college, I was so busy that my schedule couldn’t handle such long sleep-filled nights. I would have to survive on 4/5/6 hours and that was just miserable. I hated going to sleep because I knew how hard it would be for me to wake up… I’m now 26 and still feeling unsatisfied every morning and a constant exhaustion throughout the day. What to do?

Tests!! That is what you do… How many hours do I need to sleep before I reach my sweet spot? Meaning, I wake up on my own feeling super rested and ready to go right? The result = 9/10 hours. ( I also borrowed my boyfriend’s FitBit for a week to track how restless I am – this was so insightful. On an average night, he probably turns over 5-10 times maximum where I log about 20-30 turns, eek. ) In the end, I have no idea why I feel the way I do. It could be stress, it could be sleep apnea, I could just dream really hard? My fix? I’m going to try and not look at the computer a few hours before bed ( …as I write this blog post at 11:56pm, haha ), drink some sleepy-time tea ( thanks Jessica ), breath rhythmically, get one of those face masks you wear at night ( oh gosh please no! ) Who knows… Sigh of frustration… Wish me luck.

Lovely Lady – Lisa Hackwith

February 26, 2014

Introducing… the seriously talented Lisa Hackwith of Hackwith Design House. I first found Lisa through Instagram but quickly started spotting her all over the web!! Her designs are simply breathtaking and completely deserving of all the recognition they get! She has her way with silhouettes – let me tell ya. I plan to invest in one of her pieces this year – I just haven’t decided which one! Her jumpers are pretty perfect.

…a bit from her:
“I own Hackwith Design House, a small clothing company based out of Minneapolis that specializes in making small limited edition runs of clothing. Because I release new items every week, I am constantly designing – which I love because I never get bored and I’m always working on a new project. I also work with boutiques to create a collaborative piece for them that represents both Hackwith Design House and their own style. I love the challenge of coming up with something that’s equally mine and theirs and arriving at a design that I would never have arrived at myself.”

…and now her favorite piece and why:
“My favorite piece is the Hackwith Design House Dusk Kimono because even though I made it only a moth ago, I’ve already worn it a half dozen times. I love that it is a more simple shape that’s super easy wear but it has all these details like the double stitched line around the bottom of the kimono, the slight v shape that appears at the back of the neck, and the fun side slits that are open when you move – all the the little details are what makes a piece a favorite for me!”
