My Friday +

October 14, 2012

Friday morning I woke up feeling a bit bogged down with my to-do list. Every once in a while, things get so stressful that I feel like I loose sight of daily activities that the average person should be partaking in - getting some sleep & rest, allowing my thoughts to be idle ( …and not ALWAYS working on a project or thinking about work ), stopping for lunch, etc etc. So I decided to take an hour or two before I went into the office to do some online browsing and brainstorming for myself ( NOT for my clients ). Turns out an hour really isn’t much time to try and reconnect with yourself but…. I did walk away from it feeling pretty good and craving more me time.

So in my hour of “soul searching”, I decided to visit Kelli Anderson’s website. I’m pretty familair with her work but she had a lot of new projects up that were impressive and SO good, I mean… so good!! I also watched her Creative Mornings presentation ( watch below ). For the rest of the day, I had a much needed change of perspective. Looks like I need to get out of my own head every once in a while and look to others for guidance. Lesson learned.

p.s. After attending the AIGA Minnesota Design Camp, I have felt so challenged as a designer. Listening to accomplished graphic designers with a lifetime of amazing work was – intimidating? Yes. It was also incredibly eye-opening. It made me realize even more than I already know – that I have so much more to learn and work through. I instantly started reconsidering my business plan as a freelancer, how I could improve my project management skills, how I could make the experience that I am providing BETTER… Ahhh… all good things!

First off, love the blog!

I totally know the feeling, and I try to spend an hour every morning on google reader, pinterest, or dribbble just catching up on/getting inspired by what’s happening in the world of design (and other things). It’s definitely a good way to set the tone for the day ahead.

Also, kelli anderson is ridiculously talented, and i loved her creative morning talk. She also did a TED talk pretty recently, You should check it out! http://bit.ly/A8HVb8

Hey Emma! man, I’m so on board with this post – I went back to school as a post-bac student with a degree in psych but a passion for graphic design, so I’m in school for design. I’m having to find my voice and style while simultaneously developing my skills. it’s tricky! Especially living in portland where i’m surrounded by so many design heavy hitters and constantly comparing myself to them. this video is so good for my brain right now!

I love the creative mornings series, in fact one of my instructors, kate bingaman-burt was featured on creative mornings. If you haven’t seen her video you should watch – she’s great!

Emma! I feel you with this one. There are days when i look at my to-do list and feel the panic set in. But my main goal right now is to take down time and get some perspective. It’s always so hard because i feel guilty for not working all of the time, but i also know that if you are run-down then you can’t do your best work! I try to remember this when I know I need a break :) Hope you continue to find some inspiration for yourself!
